Mint Julep cocktail in a julep cup or rocks glass

Ingredients

  • 2.5 oz Bourbon
  • 0.25 oz Simple syrup
  • 8 to 10 Fresh mint leaves
  • 1 Mint sprig, for garnish
  • As needed Crushed ice

Method

  1. Add the mint leaves and syrup to a julep cup. Press the mint gently, just enough to release the oils.
  2. Add the bourbon and fill the cup halfway with crushed ice.
  3. Stir until the outside of the cup frosts.
  4. Pack more crushed ice on top to form a dome.
  5. Slap the mint sprig between your hands and set it next to the straw.

Tips

  • Press the mint. Do not shred it, or the drink tastes bitter.
  • Put the sprig where you smell it with each sip.

Best bourbon for the Mint Julep

Use a bourbon at 100 proof or higher. Crushed ice dilutes fast, and a stronger bourbon keeps its taste.
