Old Fashioned recipe

The Old Fashioned is whiskey, sugar, bitters, and a twist of orange. It is slow to stir and easy to make well at home.
  • Spirit: Bourbon or rye
  • Glass: Rocks glass
  • Garnish: Orange peel
  • Makes: 1 drink
Old Fashioned cocktail in a rocks glass

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Bourbon or rye whiskey
  • 1 Sugar cube (or 1 tsp simple syrup)
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 splash Water
  • 1 Orange peel, for garnish

Method

  1. Put the sugar cube in a rocks glass. Add the bitters and a splash of water.
  2. Stir until the sugar dissolves into a thin syrup.
  3. Add the whiskey and one large ice cube.
  4. Stir for about 20 seconds, until the glass is cold.
  5. Squeeze the orange peel over the glass so the oils land on the surface. Drop it in.

Tips

  • Use one large cube. It melts slowly, so the drink stays strong and cold.
  • Add the sugar and bitters first and dissolve them in water, not in the whiskey.

Best bourbon or rye for the Old Fashioned

Pick a bourbon at 90 to 100 proof for caramel and vanilla, or a rye for more spice. A higher proof keeps its flavor as the ice melts.
